Youre interviewing, but already have a big vacation planned. Now what

Youre interviewing, but already have a big vacation planned. Now whatYoure interviewing, but already have a big vacation planned. Now whatInterviewing for dream job when a major vacation is already on the books can beboth awkward and challenging. While theres no way to guarantee that the new potential employer wont need you to work during that time, here are a few things to consider the next time this situation sneaks up on you.Heres what you should think aboutJohn Lees, a UK-based career strategist and author, writes in the Harvard Business Review about what to keep in mindWhen the time comes to disclose your plans, think hard about what this really means, both for you and the employer. Even if you dont have a vacation already booked, its sensible to want to take some time off between jobs, since this could be one of the few times in your work history when youre not checking emails on the beach. But listen hard to the employers problem list. If its vital to get boots on the ground, you may have to think about losing deposits and canceling flights.Heres what to ask aboutMonster career expert Vicki Salemi writes that you should clarify the vacation policy. She mentions that when she welches a recruiter, she never saw a hiring manager balk when an applicant told them theyd be going on vacation right after beginning the job, or witness them having second thoughts about giving an applicant the job because they had already booked time off.In companies wherein vacation days are accrued over the course of the year, hiring managers will often allow candidates to borrow from the future you should make sure to ask if this will be an option (else youll have to take the time unpaid). Alternately, Ive seen hiring managers suggest pushing a candidates start date back until after the trip or time off was concluded so that theres no interruption in pay.Heres what to sayAlison Green, the author of the Ask a Manager blog, answered a question on her site about when to discuss dur ing a job interview the fact that youve previously booked a vacation.Dont bring it up in the interview stage it would be premature then. The time to raise it is once a company makes you an offer. At that point, its very, very normal to say something like, I have a trip scheduled from April 15-27. Im willing to take the time unpaid since I assume I wont have accrued enough vacation time by then, but I want to make sure up-front that thats okay. Its a lot better to mention this as part of the offer discussion, so that they dont feel like youre springing it on them later. This happens all the time, and its totally normal to say this. It may, however, be an issue if you dont bother to mention it until after you start. So make very sure that you mention it during the offer conversations.

How to Job Search Using Your Personality Type

How to Job Search Using Your Personality TypeHow to Job Search Using Your Personality TypeFrom the people you hang out with to the kinds of activities you enjoy in your spare time, your personality font influences much of what you do in life. It only makes sense, then, to utilize what comes naturally when taking on an important task such as a job search.Lessen the stress and increase the success of your hunt by playing to the strengths of your personality through the following strategies. Here are four tips to use your personality type to job search1. Utilize your best time of day. Some people wake up ready to take on the world, and others need an hour or two until their morning coffee jolt kicks in. Many do notlage reach their stride until after lunch, while night owls find their mojo when half the world is sleeping. Perform job search activities during your peak periods whenever possible to maximize results.2. Evaluate your rhythm. Are you a turtle or a hare? asks Aricia Shaffer, MSE, ofWoman In the Moon Productions and author of Unlocking the Secrets of the Successful Career Seeker.Do you like to take things at a slow and steady pace, working for several hours meticulously? Or do you prefer to race through things quickly? There is no right answer, but use your tendencies in your job search as well.In either case, a prioritized to-do list can be your best friend. Plow through tasks in one block, if that suits your style, or use the sheet to quickly pick up where you left off if you prefer shorter bursts of productivity.3. Recognize your networking style.Do you thrive at large events such as job fairs and professional gatherings? Do you find yourself tongue-tied in groups but quite chatty online? While job seekers in general must network, no law dictates how it must be done. Figuring out which methods jive with your personality will make you more comfortable, leading to networking more often and with better results. If youre introverted, you might prefer to connec t over email or ease into social interaction- speaking with one or two people at a time, Shaffer says. If youre extroverted, you might do great jumping into a crowd. That will impact your job search. One person may want to go into the office, shop, etc. and speak with the owner one to one another might prefer finding a job through a leads group or networking party.4. Seek positions that fit.Lastly, remember that one of the greatest things you can do to energize your job search is seek work that truly captures your interest. Reflect on each position to analyze how it might mesh with your personality. As Shaffer notes, People need to work with WHO THEY ARE rather than try to force themselves to fit into the job. Its rather like buying clothes in the wrong size and trying to change yourself to fit into them. No one would do that. Dont do that with your job search either.Readers, how do you use your personality type in your job search? Share your tips and stories with us below

Im not 54 years old. Im 22 with 32 years experience

Im leid 54 years old. Im 22 with 32 years experienceIm not 54 years old. Im 22 with 32 years experienceThis is not a rant. This is not about how we did things back in our day. This is about a real concernAn age concern.Lets put things into perspective here. With the recent and very welcome push for sexual equality, the time is also right to address the inequality of blatant ageism in design and advertising. If youre 18 to 30 years old, you may want to look away now.Ideas and creativity are not exclusive to the twenty somethings. Yes, you read that right. You forget, weve been there and done that. In fact, dont look at the wisps of grey hair and think were not still doing it. We are. This is not a top trump competition between UX and Grant enlargers. The key argument for the defence? Simply put experienced creatives are still passionate but with pragmatism and discipline. More importantly, that experience brings a much bigger picture view to a brief.Finding the balance between young and sen ior talentThere is definitely a right balance between hiring young and senior talent. Thats where senior talent is essential guiding, mentoring, coaching, bloody well inspiring.Peter Saville, Neville Brody, Paula Scher, Trevor Beattie, Stefan Sagmeister, Dave Trott, George Lois amazing creatives that the whole industry, including the kids, look up to and yet the youngest one there is a young 55.The past couple of years or so, I have witnessed this inequality first hand both in an agency role and when applying for other perm or freelance roles. I wont name and shame just yet. Im saving that for my memoirs when I truly become old and cantankerous. And its not just me. I hear this every day from my many contemporaries. One very experienced freelance copywriter I know, looked after a luxury brand for several months with huge success only to be suddenly replaced by a junior team who pretty quickly realised they were out of their depth. If it aint brokeSo my message to creative industry is relook at creatives who are over 40, even older, and think about what they can bring to the table beyond Werthers Originals. You will get proven people who can bring experienced understanding and behavioural knowledge to your new technology surely the perfect complement.Well, Im off to finish a design for a mobile AI chatbot. Finding the right position and gaining an understanding of what the role entails are one thing, but the application, interviews, and waiting period can feel like a lot of hoops to jump through. Part of managing the process means being mindful of ways you can screw it up if you arent careful. Here are five overall job search mistakes to avoidDont dismiss the process.Taking shortcuts or elend paying close attention to what the employer is asking for in your application is a fast way to end up in the pass pile. Whether you think its valid or bedrngnis, employers generally have reasons for asking certain questions or for particular information. If nothing else, not following the directions certainly doesnt give a sense of confidence.Dont skim the information.Any correspondence you get from a company is important. If they have taken the time to send it, you need to read it carefully. Its completely acceptable to ask for clarification when needed, but before you fire off an email to ask a question, look back at all your information to be sure it hasnt already been answered.Dont be uninformed.Do your research on companies and the professionals connected to them. Any knowledge you can gain is valuable. Including a line about an article you may have read profiling the company in your cover letter is a great way to show- and not just state- your interest in the job.Dont be too pushy.Do you know someone who knows someone? Do you have an email address for someone in a position to make decisions? Use caution here, my friends. While networking and connections can be very valuable in landing a great job, it is easy to go too far in those scenarios.Dont misrepresent yourself. While admitting you dont have the experience, the skill, or the education a job requires will most li kely put you out of the running, the alternative is worse. Lets say you manage to secure the position. Chances are very good that the less-than-honest information you gave will catch up to you. How To Make Better First Impressions On Candidates During the Hiring Process

How To Make Better First Impressions On Candidates During the Hiring ProcessWhile job seekers are focused on wowing hiring managers in order to snag an offer, its equally important that those tasked with finding new talent make a positive impression, too. As the job market gets mora competitive for hiring managers, a strong first impression helps your business stand out and continue to attract the most qualified professionals that your field has to offer. When youre looking to promote your employer brand by putting your companys best foot forward during the job bewerbungsinterview process, consider these tipsClearly state job requirementsYoud be surprised how many hiring managers try to fill an open role without knowing exactly who or what theyre seeking. This makes the hiring process confusing for everyone involved. Before you begin bringing candidates in for an interview, be sure that everyone involved knows what the job entails. What kinds of tasks will the person be doing? What a re the short- and long-term goals associated with the position? To whom do they report? What is the salary range? Which colleagues will they be working with most closely? What kinds of clients can they expect to service? What type of experience is necessary to excel in this role? Is any formal training or certification required?Hammering out these details before you begin hiring is essential to avoid wasting candidates time. You should also have these details in writing, so all applicants can be aware of what to expect before they submit their materials. Working off the cuff with regard to a job description makes your business look unprofessional.Be honest about what youre looking forYou may be tempted to beef up your job description to attract the best talent, but youll only end up burning bridges. Its important to be transparent during all parts of the interview process. If youre looking for a salesperson and the job requires a lot of cold calling, make this known. If youre lookin g for an account manager and theyll only be dealing with one type of client, let them know what kind of work they can expect to do should they receive an offer. You dont want to hire someone, only to have them quit two weeks in because the position wasnt at all what they expected due to a misleading job description.Know what you need out of the person who fills the roleIts likely your candidate will have follow-up questions as the interview is concluding, and some of these inquiries may pertain to the type of person youre looking for as you go through the hiring process. They may want to know what kind of person has filled the role before. What type of professional is usually successful within your company? Are you a bunch of extroverts, or more of a mixed bag? Be prepared with a thorough assessment in case the topic comes up. While you dont want to get too narrow as you create the ideal candidate in your mind, you should have some semblance of an idea about what youre looking for a s you begin the interview process and be comfortable talking about it with applicants. All individuals involved in the hiring process should be preparedWhether youre handling the hiring on your own or rely on a panel-style interview to complete the process, everyone involved should be prepared before you bring candidates in. This means youve looked over each applicants resume and cover letter, know what you want to ask, can give them an idea about how long the hiring process will take, can provide details about what the position entails, and can explain what the next steps will be. While many hiring managers feel pressure to get an open role filled as quickly as possible, its important not to begin the interview process until youre completely prepared. Bringing candidates in when you lack information or feel disjointed gives a negative impression to those who have applied for the job and can cause you to miss out on the best candidates, as they may choose to go elsewhere.Youd expect candidates to be prepared for the jobinterview so you should be too.Click To TweetBe transparent about communication throughout hiringCandidates repeatedly express frustration with the lack of communication during the hiring process. Trying to find a job is stressful enough, but not knowing where they stand during the interview process only makes it more confusing. They thought their second interview went well, but now its been a week and they havent heard anything, so theyre left wondering whether they should continue submitting their resume as aggressively as they once were. Show the job seekers who applied to your opening that you respect their time and energy by practicing good communication from start to finish during your hiring process. Let them know when they can expect to hear from you, and ask them how theyd prefer to be contacted. Some people find a phone call much easier, while others cant answer the telephone during the day, making email the best option.Offer honest fe edback to those who dont receive an offerTelling someone you dont have room for them at your company is never a pleasant task, but you can play an important role in their professional development. If there was a specific reason why they didnt get the job, consider letting them know. For example, perhaps they didnt have enough knowledge in one specific area. Be upfront with them about this so they can beef up this area of their resume. Maybe the person you went with had a professional certification that made them a more desirable candidate. Let those who didnt get an offer know so they can consider pursuing this additional training in order to become more competitive during future job searches.Choose the proper interview spaceThe environment in which you choose to conduct an interview has a significant impact on how the conversation goes. Though it may not feel important, choosing a loud, busy space causes distractions for both interviewer and job seeker. If youre straining to hear o ne another over a raucous sales meeting or half of your staff enjoying a lunch break, it will be hard to have a serious, focused conversation. On the other hand, a dimly-lit, stark room can feel unwelcoming to those coming in to discuss job opportunities. Be open to choosing a location outside of your normal office space, as well. Many hiring managers find that coffee shops or other off-campus sites lend themselves to a more relaxed job interview than the traditional conference room setting.Test the technology ahead of timeIf youll need to incorporate technology into your discussion perhaps you want to show a short PowerPoint presentation or youd like to bring up your companys website on a projector make sure youre completely comfortable with the functionality of the software ahead of time. There are few things that look worse than when you have to bring in additional hands to get technology issues resolved so you can continue on with your interview. It gives off an unprofessional appearance, and grinds the interview process to a halt. This can cause the candidate to question whether your business is truly up-to-date on the latest technology, and may encourage them to seek opportunities with businesses that have a better grasp on these details. When technology fails during a job interview it leaves a bad impression on candidates.Click To Tweet Dont skip the small talkWhile keeping the interview process running on time is crucial, bringing a candidate in and immediately drilling them on their previous work experience and educational background makes the whole thing feel uncomfortable and sterile. Take two or three minutes to make the person feel welcome by making casual conversation. This makes the discussion feel more natural and helps put the candidate at ease.Keep your social media up to dateBefore submitting their materials to your company, a responsible job seeker will probably scope out your company to see what youre all about. What kinds of clients do y ou take on? Have you won any notable awards or honors? What does the atmosphere within your office appear to be like? One way theyll do this is by checking out your erreichbar presence. If your website and social media are desperately outdated, it sends a bad message to those who may be interested in applying for a job at your company. While you may be great at customer service, the fact that you dont pay attention to your online presence can illustrate that youre out of touch with this important aspect of doing business in 2017. As a result, you may lose out on top-tier talent, who will decide instead to apply with a more tech-savvy and forward-thinking firm.Try to keep the process as on-schedule as possibleWhile some delays may be inevitable as youre interviewing, make an effort to move the process along as quickly as you can. Sure, youll want to make small talk with a candidate before immediately diving into an intense conversation, but dont let yourself get into a half-hour disc ussion of your favorite Netflix shows. If youre doing a panel interview and one person is late, dont wait 20 minutes for them to arrive. Instead, get started without them and let them catch up when theyre able. A candidate who shows up to find that youre running 45 minutes behind schedule for their interview will question how professional the business is. Respect your own time, as well as the job seekers, to make a positive first impression.Remember that candidates are judging your professionalism during the job interview too.Click To TweetMake sure theyre greeted warmlyThe hiring manager isnt the only person who plays a role in the interview process. Your companys receptionist has a major influence on the first impression your company creates, so make sure he or she gives off the kind of positive vibes you hope your business radiates. If this person is cold and unfriendly, the candidate will immediately have a negative impression of your company. Yet, if theyre engaging, this indiv idual will feel at home and probably less nervous about the process.Considering the first impression your business gives off ensures youre making a positive impact right away on each potential new hire you see. While it may not seem small details like how your receptionist greets candidates or the kind of room in which you conduct interviews matters, paying attention to these components of the process allows you to give off a polished and put together first impression. This can make your business stand out among the completion and help you recruit top-tier talent.Dont let a bad first impressions scare off the best candidates. Having a Resume is not Enough for Job Seekers

Having a Resume is not Enough for Job SeekersHaving a Resume is not Enough for Job SeekersMany professionals come to me in tears, thousands of dollars in debt, sending out resumes only to hear radio silence from employers. I am here to help clarify some aspects of why job seekers need to stop relying on their resume. The resume cant accurately capture the total sum of a job seekers personality. This think piece applies to those that have graduated as well as the most senior level professionals. Why is this happening to me?Do try to understand nothing is personal when it comes to searching for a job. Job search results are what a job seeker puts forth in an effort to attain new or improved employment. The job market is about industry supply and demand and your own personal marketability. Having a media marketing resume without any relevant experience in media marketing is of little value.Job seekers that dont take the time to market themselves for the industry they have experience in a re at a huge disadvantage. Put yourself in the shoes of your future employer when searching and applying for jobs. While unemployed looking for work, dont be afraid to apply for paid internships or part-time work that will provide hands-on expertise and keep you fresh.Target the job search in concentrated locations where companies are easily accessible and walk-in applications are welcomed.Networking events are a valuable source for professionals at any level in their career.Dont be shy. Let others know you are on the market with business cards, online websites, and video clips that showcase your skills.Remove any negative and emotionally draining factorsI have seen first-hand the struggle of job seeking without a strong support team. Whether family or friends, it is crucial to have positive support from those around you. Job seeking has been known to cause depression, anxiety, stress and many other negative emotions. The last thing you want to do is be around people who do not under stand or support you.As the Bible proverb states, Iron sharpens iron. So if you are seeking employment, its important to stay motivated and surround yourself with like-minded individuals. Having someone negative in your circle will not only distract you from keeping focus but can negatively impact any opportunities coming your way.Recently, I had an associate that always wanted someone to vent her problems to. While I was listening, I began to reflect on my own unfulfilled goals. Suddenly, I realized that her negative vibes were causing me to think negatively about myself. This actually began to impact my sleep and how I felt in the morning.I quickly made the necessary adjustments to cut out the negativity. And by adjustments I mean changed my phone number and blocked her from all of my social media accounts so she can never reach me again. This was my take on handling the situation and this approach can be tailored to fit any situation.Find positive influences that can sharpen your iron.Identify those that are negative in your circle either by their actions or lack of support.Eliminate the negativity in whatever way you see fit. Just get rid of itKeep your eyes on the prize and do whatever you can to stay motivated.Keep this in mindIts important to be realistic about your job search expectations. It isnt always fun and games. Be willing and able to make any adjustments that need to be made throughout your search. Having a professional resume is just a stepping stone. Your resume itself is not likely to land you all the interviews you are hoping for. Be the complete package and attract your future employer with more than just your resume.

Kathryn Troutmans Analysis of President Obamas Jobs Speech

Kathryn Troutmans Analysis of President Obamas Jobs SpeechKathryn Troutmans Analysis of President Obamas Jobs SpeechKathryn Troutmans Analysis of President Obamas Jobs SpeechHow Good is the Job News?Last evening, I listened closely to President Obamas speech for new ideas about jobs for Americans that would give us all hope.I heard about clean energy jobs, something President Obama discussed during the election, but it was not clear where the jobs would be coming from, or even what jobs might be.I also heard about ideas for small businesses getting help in the fasson of tax breaks and SBA loans so they could hire mora people. I listened closely to this topic because of my recent difficult experience with it. I am the president of a small business, and two weeks ago I got an SBA loan to grow the business and hire more staff. BUT, it took me one year to get the SBA loan, and collateral I had to put down was disproportionately huge four times the amount of the loan. Basically, the SBA and the small community bank could take over everything I own if anything ever happens to me or to my business. Very few small business owners have this amount of collateral to support a business loan. So, I was understandably skeptical about Obamas ideas regarding the SBA loans as a way to create more jobs.Needless to say, I did not come away from the speech with much positive news to share with you. This morning I took a new approach. I decided to look past the political rhetoric and examine the actions actually being taken right now to generate more jobs for Americans. So, I read the transcript of last nights speech to compare Obamas NEW JOB IDEAS with the NEW AND PROPOSED BILLS that will support those ideas. This is what I found outPASSED BILL (2009)Recovery Act (passed) to create Construction JobsThis bill has been passed last year and is in action.BILLS PASSED RECENTLY OR WILL PASSNew GI Bill and Military Family Bill for more Military Family / Vet Services JobsThis bill has pas sed, and these jobs will begin to appear very soon.New Education Bill to create more Education JobsThis bill will probably pass and will create more education / teaching jobs.BILLS IN PROGRESSThe Jobs Bill $154B Bill for Transportation and Instructor Training JobsThis bill has not passed yet.SBA Loans for Small Businesses ($30B to community banks) to create new Small Business JobsThe Main Street Lending Restoration Act was just proposed in December 2009.Doha Bill for more Global Exporting / Business JobsThis problematic bill has been in the works for a long time and may not pass.Climate and Energy Bill to create new Clean Energy JobsThis bill has not passed yet the Senate yet.and A NOTE ABOUT THE SPENDING FREEZE For those of you who have been worried about a spending freeze, the one piece of solid good news I can give you is that the spending freeze will not start until 2011. Lets move forward with hope that the programs will begin to have a positive impact on our jobs situation s oon.SUMMARYMy feeling last night was right the speech did not say much about REAL JOB CREATION TODAY. So, moving forward, I will continue with my federal job search counseling, training, book publishing and other activities as I have been doing. How to Become a Patient Registration Clerk

How to Become a Patient Registration Clerk How to Become a Patient Registration Clerk With an aging population and more citizens gaining health insurance, the U.S. healthcare industry is growing. To meet this increasing demand, hospitals and clinics are hiring additional medical administrative professionals. One such role is the patient registration clerk, also referred to as patient registrar, intake clerk, patient access representative, patient coordinator/scheduler or admissions clerk. If you are highly organized, adept at processes and arranging schedules, and interested in medical terminology, a career in the field of healthcare access management could be a good fit for you. Why are patient registration clerks needed? Admissions clerks are the usual first point of contact for patients, and they act as both receptionists and medical secretaries. Efficient registration is important for medical facilities, as it ensures the smooth flow of patients through the healthcare system. What̢۪s more, accurate intake means properly processed paperwork, which ensures prompt payments from insurance companies. What are the daily responsibilities and job duties? Patient registration clerks wear several hats. They greet patients and their families when they arrive at a hospital, clinic or medical office. As the job title suggests, these clerks lead patients through the signing-in process, ensuring they fill out and sign all necessary forms. They ask pertinent questions and make sure all patient information, including insurance plan details, is correct and up to date. They also confirm physician referrals and ensure authorizations are in order. When all the necessary information has been gathered, they enter it into the healthcare facility̢۪s computer system. Admissions clerks print out identification labels for patient charts and, in a hospital setting, create ID bracelets. In a large facility, these administrative specialists direct patients to where they need to go. In smaller clinics, intake clerks may be asked to perform basic medical measurements, such as height, weight and blood pressure. Another part of the job for patient registration clerks is to set up appointments, preregister patients, create accounts and send out appointment reminders. By phone or in person, intake clerks answer patients̢۪ non-medical questions regarding test results, insurance, co-pays and payment options, and follow-up appointments. Because registration clerks deal with the financial side of the healthcare business, they are in frequent contact with patients, private insurance companies and - for participating facilities - Medicaid and Medicare. These specialists check patients̢۪ insurance network and eligibility, submit paperwork for reimbursements and receive co-pays and payments. If patients and their families are unable to meet their financial obligations, registration specialists refer them to resources for financial counseling and assistance. How much does a patient registration clerk make? According to the 2019 OfficeTeam Salary Guide, the salary midpoint for a patient registration/intake/admissions clerk is $30,500. At the midpoint, candidates have average experience with the necessary skills to meet the job requirements, and the role may be in an industry where competition for talent is moderate. The salaries listed in the Salary Guide reflect starting pay only and are based on actual placements throughout the United States, as well as an analysis of the demand for the role, the supply of talent and other market conditions. Use our Salary Calculator to customize the salary for an admissions clerk in your specific city. What qualifications do you need for this role? For the majority of patient registration roles, a high school diploma or equivalent is sufficient. Some employers prefer candidates with a relevant associate̢۪s degree, such as in health information technology. Offered by some business and vocational schools, the curriculum includes medical and insurance terminology, computer skills, data entry and management, customer service training and methods of reimbursement. Programs approved by the internationally recognized Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) can help you stand out from the competition during a job search. If you̢۪re serious about moving up in this field, you could work toward a certification. The National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) offers two tracks: the Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) and the more advanced Certified Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM). To be eligible for either exam, applicants are required to have either medical or financial experience, or a post-secondary degree in a relevant field. As for technical skills, employers seek candidates who understand medical terminology, have an aptitude for technology and data management, and can keep on top of the ever-changing field of healthcare legislation. How important are soft skills? Extremely. In fact, emotional intelligence is at the heart of this medical administrative job. In a nutshell, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand others̢۪ points of view and to treat patients with the compassion and dignity they deserve. Registration clerks encounter people in need of medical care, and some of them are very ill. These professionals help to ensure a positive experience under trying and stressful circumstances. Registration clerks must also be organized and detail-oriented. As they collect and enter patient information, their accuracy means patients won̢۪t face delays and insurance reimbursements will be paid promptly. And because these professionals deal with sensitive personal information, such as health status and diagnoses, keeping what they find confidential is a key character trait for this role. Being the first point of contact for patients, registrars need exceptional verbal communication skills. The best people in this role are calm, efficient and diplomatic, even when under pressure. Because patients come from all walks of life, registrars should be comfortable interacting with a diverse population - from neonatal to geriatric patients, indigent to wealthy. Fluency in a second language is very helpful. Patient access clerks should be highly adaptable, as the healthcare and insurance fields do not stand still. Lawmakers pass new legislation, providers move in and out of networks, and reimbursement rates go up and down. These professionals must be open to changes in their workflow and processes. Job Seekers, Are You Committing These Resume Sins

Job Seekers, Are You Committing These Resume Sins Job Seekers, Are You Committing These Resume Sins With the average job posting receiving more than 250 applications, recruiters and hiring managers spend most of their time reading resumes  looking for ways to weed out candidates. What mistakes will keep you from being considered? Read on to learn some of the ways your resume may be hampering your job search: Not using keywords Most employers these days use applicant tracking systems as part of their hiring process. This means that your resume will be scanned for keywords relevant to the job listing. If the right keywords dont appear on your resume, your resume will get passed over- even if youre actually qualified.  Common keywords include things such as job titles; industry-related tools (such as certain software programs); and degrees, certifications, or licenses. Applicant tracking systems make it even more important to be specific. For example, the terms accounting software and photo editing software are too general- list the specific programs youve used. Not having someone else proofread   Having just one or two typos on your resume will get you immediately placed in the no pile 76 percent of the time, according to an Accountemps survey. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to make sure your resume is error-free. Tricks such as looking over a printed copy of your resume, or reading it out loud, will help by giving you a fresh perspective. Tools such as spell check are helpful, but will not catch every error for you. Spell check wont notice if Marketing Manger is among your job titles, for example. A  fresh set of eyes  will spot things that you dont, so ask a mentor, friend, or family member to proofread your resume and provide you with honest feedback. Not using enough white space Yes, you can fit a lot of text onto a page by using 0.25 margins and 9-point text. No, that does not mean you should. Your resume should be easily readable at a glance. Avoid using paragraphs; key information is too easily buried in dense blocks of text, and hiring managers will not sit and dutifully read each and every word.  Your resume is not an autobiography- its job is to quickly and clearly make the case that you are a good candidate for the role. White space is pleasing to the eye and makes it so that the text you do include stands out. If your resume is two pages long, and you have already resorted to tinkering with tiny margins and font sizes  to keep it from getting any longer, then formatting isnt your issue- you need to edit. Not including months in  employment dates Streamlining your resume is a good idea in general, but in this instance, its best to err on the side of providing more information. Many people with employment gaps think that they can hide their period of unemployment by listing only the years they spent at each position, leaving off the months. Hiring managers know about this common trick, and will assume you are trying to hide something. Further, they will be left wondering how much experience you actually had in each role. If you say you worked someplace from 2012 to 2013, does that mean that you worked there two months (December 2012 to January 2013) or 24 months (January 2012 to December 2013)?  The purpose of your resume is not to leave a hiring manager wondering about your experience and qualifications, but to provide them with all of the information they need to decide whether youre a good candidate for the position theyre filling. Using cliches When writing resumes, many people fall back on corporate jargon because of a misguided belief that it makes them sound  authoritative. In reality, it mostly makes them sound vague. The verb interfaced is one of the more common culprits. When a job seeker says that they interfaced with someone, all they are really saying is that they met with someone. Remember, an effective resume is more than simply a list of job duties. Meeting with someone isnt an accomplishment in and of itself, and doesnt belong on your resume. Instead of putting the focus on the fact that you interfaced with someone, put the focus where it ought to be: on why you met, the project you were working on, and what that project ultimately accomplished. Simplify your language and highlight specific achievements. The good news for those who have committed these resume sins is that each one involves a simple fix. Correct these errors, and your resume will garner much more interest.

How to Hire an Experienced Brand Manager

How to Hire an Experienced Brand Manager How to Hire an Experienced Brand Manager So you released your posting for your brand manager opening out into the wild. You’re getting pinged nearly nonstop with responses from excited job seekers. Score! But when you start digging into the resumes, your excitement fades. It turns out few, if any, of the applicants have the expertise your company needs to take your branding strategy to the next level. Now you’re wondering what else you can do to find candidates you actually want to meet. You’re not alone. According to The Creative Group 2019 Salary Guide, 45 percent of advertising and marketing executives said it’s challenging to find creative professionals today - and it can be even more difficult to find candidates with sufficient experience for the brand manager role. “Employers are looking for candidates with at least five years of true brand management experience under their belt, but they’re hard to find here,” says Sarah Elizabeth Zeis, division director for The Creative Group in St. Louis. While looking for seasoned brand managers can feel like hunting for a unicorn, our staffing specialists have some tips to help you find the candidates you want - and help you determine a salary that’ll get them on board. Find the right stuff “Finding specific industry experience is a roadblock many hiring managers come up against in Denver,” says Eric Kimble, division director for The Creative Group there. He encourages employers to look for candidates with a history of working with major brands. Even if they haven’t worked in your specific industry, they can apply brand strategies from the big players to your company’s branding. Katie Bergin, division director for The Creative Group in Austin, Texas - also a challenging market for finding highly skilled brand managers - suggests another approach. “Don’t think about the number of years,” Bergin tells clients. “Instead, consider whether the applicant has worked in similar roles even if in other industries.” Dig deeper Across these markets, many employers have to rely on additional resources to find the right hire. “Solid candidates we get are often referrals from employers we work with and candidates we’ve placed,” Bergin notes. Kimble adds, “We typically find candidates through our professional network.” That’s one reason why more hiring managers are turning to professional recruiters. These staffing specialists have deep networks they can tap into to help speed up the recruiting process. “We’re good at digging deep,” Zeis says. Pay for what you really want Across the country, salary continues to be an important part of the hiring equation, and offering competitive compensation is a must. Amy Mangan with The Creative Group in Atlanta cautions employers to make sure their expectations align with their budgets. “Companies who want five to 10 years of industry-specific brand management experience need to pay at or even above market,” says Mangan, a division director. The midpoint salary for a brand/product manager is $90,000. Get salary information specific to your location in The Creative Group 2019 Salary Guide. Sweeten the pot While salary is crucial, it’s just one factor in an applicant’s decision. As competition for skilled creatives continues to increase, savvy employers offer extra perks and benefits to seal the deal, such as additional vacation days, workplace wellness programs and flexible scheduling options like telecommuting. Show potential hires the value you place on work-life balance and employee satisfaction. This can go a long way in securing top candidates with in-demand skills and experience. This post has been updated to reflect more current information.

Amazon Offers Employees $12,000 for Job Training Theyre Hiring!

Amazon Offers Employees $12,000 for Job Training They’re Hiring! Amazon Offers Employees $12,000 for Job Training They’re Hiring!   How to Write a Memorable Post-Interview Thank You Note Over the past decade, Amazon has become the go-to retailer for shoppers worldwide, touching nearly every facet of our lives from books to groceries. However, Amazon is also in the business of supporting career development and training future leaders on long-term, valuable skills. Since 2012, Amazon has offered full and part-time employees the opportunity to learn new skills to be competitive in the job market through the Amazon Career Choice Program .  For hourly associates with more than one year of tenure, Amazon pre-pays 95% of tuition, fees, and textbooks (up to $12,000) for certificates and associate degrees in high-demand occupations such as aircraft mechanics, computer-aided design, machine tool technologies, medical lab technologies, and nursing. That’s right; Amazon is helping employees prepare for the next stage of their careers, even if it isn’t at Amazon. “We offer training paths that could very likely lead to opportunities and careers outside of Amazon, but we think if we can help people realize their dreams, we want to be a part of it,” Steven Johnson, a global leader for Amazon’s Career Choice program. This benefit provides a new lens through which job seekers can view the global retailer. Amazon is going above and beyond the typical “a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.” CEO Jeff Bezos and the Amazon leadership are showing that they care about the whole employee, the person who works for them and the person who looks back to say, “I loved my time working at Amazon.” And investing in their 560,000 employees is paying off. According to Jeff Bezos’ annual shareholders letter , “Globally more than 16,000 associates (including more than 12,000 in the U.S.) have joined Career Choice since the program launched in 2012.” The program is now active in 10 countries and it will be expanding for employees in South Africa, Costa Rica, and Slovakia later this year. Bringing new meaning to ‘work study’, Amazon has brought the Career Choice Program right to its warehouses and fulfillment centers to make the classes accessible, but to also inspire others. They have built 39 Career Choice classrooms and plan to build more as associates pursue certificates and degrees in eligible in-demand fields. If you’re looking for a company who cares about your professional development and potential, Amazon may be the perfect fit for you. They’re currently hiring hourly associates across the country. What to do if these 9 bad things happen during a job interview

What to do if these 9 bad things happen during a job interview What to do if these 9 bad things happen during a job interview You spend hours - sometimes days - preparing for a job interview,  hoping that everything will go perfectly. In your ideal world, the hiring manager will ask the questions for which you are most ready, they’ll appreciate your skills and abilities, and they will be amazed at your insights and ideas. Unfortunately, most of us don’t live in an ideal world.  Unexpected problems often pop up at the worst possible times - say, in the middle of a job interview.Do your best to prepare for these  troublesome interview situations, to the extent that you can. But you’ll also need to deal with some things on the fly. Here are  nine things that may go wrong during an interview, and how you should handle each problem.1. You show up late.Technically, this is something that happens before the interview begins, but it fits the category of an unfortunate problem. Whether you were stuck in traffic or accidentally put the wrong time on your calendar, a lack of punctuality can start the interview on a bad note. If you know you’re running late, it’s a good idea to  call ahead to let the interviewers know, apologize, and see if they’d like to reschedule. Be humble, but don’t apologize so much that you sound whiny. Chances are they’ve been late for something in their lives, too, so they ’ll probably be understanding.2. The interviewer is switched at the last minute. You usually know in advance who will be interviewing you, which gives you an opportunity to research the person(s) and prepare to talk to them. If  someone else meets you for the interview  when you arrive, it can throw you off your game.  However, this is really an opportunity for you to get to know the new person, according to an article from The Muse.“Ask questions about her position, specifically how her job relates to the one you’re gunning for, and ask about her career background in case you have something in common,” the article says. “Although it can be disquieting at first, after you get over the initial surprise of the switch, you’ll likely find that you can talk just as much to this person as to the one you planned on interviewing with originally. That displays your adaptability and willingness to take on an unexpected challenge.”3. The technology you need for a presentation isnâ €™t working. For some positions, the interviewers expect you to prepare and present information on a topic relevant to the job. If the computer or projector won’t work when you try to begin, it can lead to many tense and awkward moments. To overcome this problem, try to memorize the key points of your presentation in advance. Bring a printed copy of your slide deck with you, or  hard copies of other materials  that will help you make your points. Instead of wasting the precious few minutes you have with the interviewers trying to get a computer to work, move along with your presentation.  This will show that you can overcome problems and stay on track even when the unexpected occurs.4. The interviewer notices an error or inconsistency in your resume. It’s a good idea to bring several  printed copies of your resume  with you to the interview, both for yourself and the interviewers. Hopefully, that resume is accurate and honest. If you have exaggerated an accomplishment or made an e rror in reporting your past positions, chances are that’s the one experience the interviewer will further explore. If this happens,  own the mistake and correct the error. Then try to salvage the point by providing a specific example of the skills you possess.5. The hiring manager is rude or a bad interviewer. If the former is the case, you might want to reconsider your interest in the position. Stay engaged and polite during the interview, in case they’re just having a bad day, but  keep the behavior in mind as you move forward. If the person simply isn’t good at interviewing, The Muse article suggests that you remember “the points you want to discuss about yourself and the questions you want to ask about the position. Then, take an active role in directing the conversation to keep the person on topic.”6. The interview is interrupted by distractions.Hopefully, you remembered to turn off the ringer on your phone and stow it somewhere during the interview  so you won’t be the cause of an embarrassing interruption. If that does happen- or if the interviewer seems distracted by their phone or by people walking by- you may have to work harder to keep the meeting on track.Be polite and patient, up to a point. If the interruptions become so frequent that a meaningful conversation is impossible, ask if it would be helpful to reschedule, acknowledging that you understand unexpected emergencies sometimes develop and you want them to handle whatever has come up. No matter what, keep your cool.7. You get angryMaybe those previously mentioned distractions are finally too much for you. Or maybe you’re asked about a job from which you were fired, and old feelings of anger rise to the surface. If you feel that happening,  you must get yourself back under control.“Angry people are NOT people employers want to hire.  Angry people are not fun to work with,” says an article from Job-Hunt.org. To avoid such a reaction, the article says, “Stop, before you enter the employer’s premises, take a few deep breaths, focus on the opportunity that awaits you at this potential employer, put a smile on your face, and do your best to switch gears mentally so you are  not  Ã¢€˜in a bad place’ in your mind.”8. You zone out and miss a questionYou would think that an interview would make you nervous enough that zoning out couldn’t occur, but  if the hiring manager is droning on about something and your mind wanders, you could miss a question. That will not look good to your prospective employer, according to an article from The Balance Careers. “If you feel your attention slipping away, make an effort to stay engaged. Maintain eye contact, lean forward slightly when talking to your interviewer, and  make an active effort to listen effectively.”9. You realize you don’t really want the job for which you are interviewingAs you answer questions and learn more about the job, you may discover that  the position you’re discussing isn’t a good f it for you. If this happens, and you’re still interested in working for the company, don’t get frustrated. Instead, continue to emphasize your skills.  Talk about why you want to work for the organization  and how you could help it prosper. Even if you don’t get the position you were interviewing for, you may plant a seed that will lead the interviewer to suggest you for a more appropriate spot. It’s always better to build bridges than to burn them.As in all parts of life, unexpected problems will pop up during a job interview. It’s inevitable. By accepting that reality and mentally preparing to handle what might go wrong, you’ll show that you’re adaptable and unflappable when it does. This article was originally published on FlexJobs.com

How to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your Boss

How to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your Boss How to Have the Career Commitment Talk With Your Boss Consider three of my clients: Nathan is the community manager for an up-and-coming brand’s online presence, Emily develops apps for a popular mobile platform, and Megan works for a large regional manufacturer that’s been run by the same family for generations. And they all have the same problem. Nathan, Emily, and Megan are all great at what they do, but don’t have a clear path for getting promoted to bigger and better things. Many positions in the tech, startup, social media, and small business ecosystems defy the traditional rules of moving up the ladder. Just think: What’s the next step after developing those apps or managing those online communities? How do you move up in a family-owned business? In many cases, there simply isn’t a defined logical next step. It’s a challenge many employees face today. Research shows that less than 50% of employees see viable advancement opportunities with their current employers. On top of that, only about a third of managers effectively discuss career development during the performance management process. The bottom line? If you want a viable future at your company, you’d better get ready to take the situation into your own hands. That means sitting down with your manager to have the big “where is this relationship going?” conversation. And when you do, here are a few tips to keep in mind. Take Ownership It’s your career. There’s no one more invested in your future than you. Waiting for your manager to enlighten you with his or her version of your ideal next step is not a strategy. Instead, own up to the fact that neither your organization nor your manager is in charge of your next step. You are. Prepare Think about where you perform well and how that can position yourself to be successful in your next role. Document your key accomplishments and reflect on the specific results you’ve achieved for the organization. Once you’ve collected your supporting materials, ask for a meeting with your manager to discuss your future. Treat it like a strategic business meeting- because it is! Connect With Your Manager Begin the meeting by looking at the situation through the lens of your manager. Get a sense for how invested he or she is in helping you. Start with your purpose: “Jocelyn, I’d like to talk about what the next step in my career looks like. I’d really like it to be with this organization, but the next steps here aren’t completely clear to me.” Review your accomplishments and reiterate your enthusiasm about working there: “I’ve been here two years and I’ve proven my ability to grow community traffic. It’s been a tremendous growth experience for me- and for the company. I’ve increased engagement by 65% and drove 20% more unique visitors to our website. I’ve met or exceeded my key performance indicators in each of these areas while developing strong relationships with our internal and external stakeholders.” What happens next will give you an idea of how aligned your boss is with your performance. Listen for her feedback; if she’s supportive, it’s likely she’ll advocate for you. Describe Your Personal Vision Share with your manager where you see yourself in one, three, or five years. Even without specifics like job titles, have a general sense for where you’re headed. Do you want to manage people? Work with higher-profile clients? Consider what skills you’d like to develop, what experiences you’d like to have, and what knowledge you’d like to acquire. Share how these things can help the organization solve its business problems. Ask for What You Want Your boss may know you do a great job, but her plate is probably completely full with her own obligations. If you’re interested in a promotion or new assignment, ask! You could, for example, say, “Jocelyn, based on the information we’ve discussed, what ideas do you have about what my next step here could be?” This lets her know you want to move- preferably within the organization- but intimates that it may have to be elsewhere if necessary. If she’s all over it, spilling with creative ideas to circumvent a “ladder-less” system, great! If she’s at a complete loss for what to tell you or how to direct you, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Develop Your Own Strategy If you want to stay with the company, but your boss is rudderless in the idea pond, try researching other departments that could use your skill set and experience. Check in with contacts you have elsewhere in the organization, dig into pain points you hear them mention, and connect to people who need your help. Look at what’s changing in the business and see how you can fit in. For example, is there a merger or divestiture on the horizon? Perhaps you can develop an app to usher new employees through the merger process, to help them adapt to new processes and procedures. Or, you might propose a community platform solely for employees- or customers- from the newly acquired organization. Get Your Manager’s Sponsorship and Support Even if your boss doesn’t open every door, you can reasonably expect that (assuming you’re a good performer) she will sponsor your move within the organization. After all, having your shining talent on her team is a gold star for her. Promoting you strengthens her reputation as a perceptive talent manager. Show her what you’ve uncovered in your research. Identify three to five good “next step” possibilities and mutually agree on the best path. Then, ask that she commit to making the necessary introductions and recommendations. Reiterate that you want to stay with the organization- that’s your first choice. If, however, you can’t figure out how to make that happen or if she’s unwilling to help open the doors to make that happen, let her know you’ll be open to looking at opportunities outside the company. Once you’ve delivered the performance, presented your case, and made your ask, it’s up to your manager to decide if and how she will help your career movement. And if she isn’t willing to sponsor or advocate for you, your move up will most definitely mean a move out. Whether you move into the next big thing where you are or head out to a new organizational frontier, you’ll be better having gone through this process. Asking for what you deserve is a career skill you need- and one that will continue to benefit you well into the future. Photo of ring courtesy of Shutterstock.

Why Rewriting Your Resume Will Open Doors

Why Rewriting Your Resume Will Open Doors Why Rewriting Your Resume Will Open Doors Todays post is a guest post by Troy Lilly, who penned this after taking my free resume writing course and experiencing the transformative power of a strong resume. Its my hope that his experience will inspire you all to do the same . Louise Fletcher I had to write about your free resume course online. Like many other people, I didnt have the money to pay for professional resume writing services, but as someone in the communications field, I am a competent writer and only needed to grasp the concepts in the tutorial. I took your suggestions and applied them carefully and thoroughly. My resume transformed from a bland, vague list of duties to an impressive summary of exceptional achievements that made me want to hire myself. Most importantly, I learned to tailor my resume to the position and organization I was applying to. Instead of including every single skill or technology I was aware of (whether it was relevant or not), I deleted the unnecessary ones and scanned the job description to make sure I mentioned the ones they asked the applicant to have. Also, I took the time to address each of the core job responsibilities and dedicated at least one bullet per past job experience to show I had accomplished something similar before. For example, this position calls for a project specialist to facilitate online mentoring between young entrepreneurs and emerging students. I stated that I had helped execute a mentoring network of media professionals and high school students at a Washington Post journalism workshop for two years. Basically stating, I have done this and done it well on a major scale. Then there was the cover letter! When I set down to craft it, I identified two of the most crucial responsibilities from the job listing and explained specifically how I had successfully tackled them in past jobs, and alluded to the fact that I already had some ideas as to how to address them should I be hired for the job. I submitted my resume on last Thursday at 5 p.m. My application package was routed through HR and to the hiring manager, and I got a call by 1 p.m. Friday afternoon the very next day! Looking at my resume and cover letter, I can say I am very impressed. Your best tip for me was to tailor the resume to the job listing. The employer tells you EXACTLY what they need. We as the applicants usually waste our resumes telling the most narcissistic things weve ever done most of which the employer has no use for. Telling them what you can do to solve their problems makes your resume surge to the top of the pack. If youd like to learn the principles that catapulted Troys resume to the top of the pile, take the free course for yourself. Its easy to follow and takes less than 2 weeks. When it ends youll have a resume that will truly open doors. (Photo by Kretyen)
